Gum & Periodontal Disease

PROTECT NOT ONLY YOUR SMILE BUT YOUR OVERALL HEALTH…

Periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) is a more serious dental condition that can affect your overall health if not treated properly. Fortunately, Dr. Dawn Gayken and her caring staff are well trained and experienced in treating this disease.

What is periodontal disease? It is a bacterial infection in the gum tissue and bone surrounding the teeth.  It is critical that you recognize the symptoms of this disease so you can take the appropriate action to reverse it before tooth loss occurs.

The following are signs of gum disease:

  • Bleeding
  • Receding gums
  • Swollen gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Loss of bone around the teeth

GINGIVITIS

Gingivitis is the beginning stage of periodontal disease. The signs are inflamed and reddened gums. This condition is caused by plaque build up on the teeth. There is typically no pain or discomfort associated with this mild form of periodontal disease, however, the gums do bleed easily.

PERIODONTITIS

Periodontitis is a more advanced stage of gum disease and occurs when the plaque build up continues and advances below the gum line. Unfortunately, this can advance to destruction of the bone surrounding the teeth. As this disease progresses, teeth may become loose and must be removed.

To prevent periodontal disease, it’s important that you brush and floss regularly and visit our dental office twice a year for professional cleanings.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please contact our office today to schedule an appointment.
